Least Visited, Most Re-Visited

This is the tagline for Isle Royale National Park. It’s the least visited National Park. However, it is the MOST REvisited national park. Amazing. It is remote. It is isolated. It is difficult to get to with the various fairy schedules. The amenities are wonderfully thin. But once you’re there, it gets inside you. And when you leave, you can’t stop thinking about it.

Last year, I was very fortunate to backpack there with my father, Rick Braidwood, for our annual FatherSonGetOut. He loved it there too. In fact, when he found out I was accepted into the residency, I think we started competing for who was more excited, me or him!

I am incredibly excited and grateful to be able to return this year but in the roll of artist-in-residence. Last year I got to see, hear, and experience some amazing things. It set the stage for my understanding of the Island. This year, I will have the opportunity to go even deeper with my work and connection there. In fact, at the end of my residency, we have worked it out so that my father will join me and we’ll be embarking on this year’s FatherSonGetOut on the island again.

I am so grateful for this opportunity to contribute to that “most revisited” statistic.
